Understanding Depression

Depression is one of the most widespread mental health issues and what differentiates it from the normal sadness is the duration and the other symptoms associated with it.

The WHO estimates around 350,000,000 people suffer from depression around the world. It is the second biggest cause of death after heart diseases. And depression can often lead to other illnesses as well.

"You feel sad all the time, you find it very difficult to motivate yourself to do something." This is a symptom that a lot of us can relate to these symptoms.

Depression is a very complex problem and it is very easy to overdiagnose someone. You might be sad after a breakup. That doesn't necessarily mean you are depressed; being sad is characterized as normal in this scenario.
Although a complete diagnosis can only be done by a psychiatrist, one very obvious sign to look for to find if you have depression is to look at the duration of the symptoms. For example, if you've been sad for several weeks, then it is safe to assume that you may have clinical depression. But even then, the verdict rests with your psychiatrist.

The happiness hormone, aka dopamine affects our mood and how 'happy' we feel. Other hormones, like seratonin and oxytocin also come into play. Depression is, in laymen's terms, a result of imbalance of these hormones in the brain and disturbed brain activity in emotion regulating parts of the brain, like the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate and frontal lobe.

There can be several factors contributing to depression, some of which can be, but aren't limited to:

  • Genetics
  • Unsolved traumatic experiences from childhood
  • major traumatic and emotional experiences
  • certain types of medication
It can be hard to give just a few causes for depression that work on all of us, and a lot of research is required before we can fully understand it.

Although symptoms vary a lot, some key symptoms too look out for are:

  • Social withdrawal
  • Loss of willingness to have fun
  • Decreased productivity
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Excessive crying
  • Physical agitation or inhibited behaviour
  • Feeling of guilt, extreme sadness

  1. As a sign of gratitude for how my son was saved from autism, I decided to reach out to those still suffering from this.My son suffered autism in 2017 and it was really tough and heartbreaking for me because he was my all and the symptoms were terrible, he always had difficulty with communication, and he always complained of poor eye contact. We tried various therapies prescribed by our neurologist but none could cure him. I searched for a cure and I saw a testimony by someone who was cured and so many others with similar body problems, and he left the contact of the doctor who had the cure to autism. I never imagined autism has a natural cure not until I contacted him, and he assured me my son will be fine. I got the herbal medication he recommended and my son used it and in one month time he was fully okay even up till this moment he is so full of life. Undestanding Mental Health

Most of the times, mental health is confused with mental illness, since historically, mental health services were provided only for mental disorders like Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, and Anorexia. Mental health is still misunderstood by many people, and it is still considered taboo in many parts of the world. To remove this social stigma is to talk about it and educate people about mental health. Our brain is the most complex organ in the whole human body and much like the other organs, it can have problems too. Issues related to our psychological and cognitive functioning are classified under mental health. The term 'Mental Health' encompasses mental wellbeing and mental illness. Problems with our mental health are very common and can range from mild stress to severe depression. Most of the times, the issues are not very significant and can be managed with a little bit of effort. The first step towards educating ourselves is acknowledging the fact that mental i

Understanding Self Harm

Let me tell you all a story. Back in college, I used to be friends with this amazing girl who was into sports and always aced her exams. She was what you'd call a model student. Straight A's, teachers fawning over her, the students going to her for notes before every exam, she had her career down on the right path. So one day, she and I were sitting in the cafeteria during lunch. It was a fairly common Friday, college ended early, and we decided to grab a bit of food before we went out with friends. We were just talking about our lives and other random stuff you'd expect college kids to talk about when I noticed scar-like markings on her hand. Being a student of psychology and human behavior, I immediately knew something was up. I asked her "What's that?" She immediately rolled down her sleeves and brushed it off, saying "nothing" But I was persistent, and I kept asking her what it was about and why she was doing what she was doing. I told her that i
